Like the sitcom.. It’s a fantasy for alot of people.. having a group of friends who become as close as family.  Good friends are a blessing and yet friendships are often very low on our list of priorities. Proverbs is about doing life well... moving friendship from the suburbs to the centre of our lives.  

What is a friend? Many philosophers have added their own interpretation.. facebook would suggest it’s someone we may have met once and never actually speak to !

Friendship comes from God.. it is His design.  in the beginning Adam and Eve walked together.. with each other and with God.  We are made for side by side relationships.. people to walk alongside us.

What should we look for in a friend and what sort of friend should we be?

1. Faithful

Proverbs Ch 19 v7, v4,  a true friend is there in the hard times.. Jesus said ‘you are my friends’ (John Ch 15) even though they would later deny Him.. He lay down His life as His friends / disciples hid in fear.

2. Honest

Proverbs Ch 27 v5-6, Ch 29 v5. A true friend will be honest... we can trust them to say the hard things. flattery can ruin us, we need honesty if we want to grow. Where iron sharpens iron there is friction.. some pain is good.. it’s growing pain.  it’s good to have friends who challenge us, it helps us to grow.  Ch 27 v9 Atrue friend will give advice out of genuine concern.

How does God help us to find good friends?

Jesus came to restore our friendship with God and the security of this helps us in our relationships with others.
